I must be a libertarian because I feel the rights of the individual should outweigh the wishes of the group. That’s just the opposite of nationalism, religion, and other forms of tribal thinking.
Anyone should have the right to do anything that doesn’t excessively or unnecessarily interfere with the next person. We should be able to think of ourselves first, before the social order. The social order should be a product of the actions of it’s individual citizens. Not the other way around.
But tribal thinking always wants our actions to conform to the social order first. Then our personal actions and wishes come second. If they are even allowed at all.
I’m not talking about anarchy. We all need social order. We need language and laws. We need safe food and water and crime free streets.
But what we don’t need is the group demanding conformity. Instead, it should be promoting individuality as the social ideal.
This would lead to a broader, more stable social order than can ever be build from the authoritarian top down models of the past.
