Gay marriage will destroy society. How often do we hear this argument from the religious community? The assumption is that any change is a bad change.
Yes gay marriages will change society. But the only thing they will destroy is the status quo.
Religions are rooted in the past so any change is seen as a threat. By definition change is hard for religions because they are all about precedence, about continuing what has come before.
If religions change it’s an acknowledgement that they were wrong about something in the past. And to admit they are wrong in one area subjects the whole system to scrutiny because religions are build on the infallible word of God.
If religion is wrong in one area, might it also be wrong in other areas? And if any part of the word is wrong then the entire foundation of the faith system is suspect.
Religions can’t change because to do so will cast a shadow on their entire legitimacy. So they have to fight to preserve the status quo in order to justify their existence.
Gay rights will not destroy society. It will just destroy the status quo.
