When I read this article “Opinion: Christian conservatives betray their values in criticizing Ramaswamy’s faith” I was disappointed to see the author confusing Christian values with American values. Because they aren’t the same.
And God spoke all these words: ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.”
Exodus 20:1-3
Since it rejects or denies the existence of God, atheism [Islam, Hinduism, etc] is a sin…
Catechism of The Catholic Church #2125
According to the Bible, all those who do not believe in the Christian God and/or those who believe in other gods are sinners. Religious freedom isn’t a Christian value. It’s a secular American value.
Christians aren’t shy about calling out sins against Leviticus 18:22 (LGBT+). Hinduism is clearly a sin against the First Commandment so we would expect Christians to speak about it as such:
“Our God will not be mocked” by having Christians support what she described as a candidate who believes in “many gods.””.
The author writes
“It’s discouraging to see some of my fellow conservatives attacking rising GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy for his Hindu faith. It is wrong and un-American. It violates the spirit, if not the law, of the Constitution.”
While discriminating against someone based on their religious beliefs isn’t an American value, it’s a core Christian value.
I find it interesting that the Christian community rarely attacks a Muslim politician directly like this. But they are bold in attacking a Hindu. This is likely because the Muslim community would rise up and defend themselves where as the Hindu community in America is not nearly as organized and are therefore a much softer target.
Let’s be honest with ourselves. Religious freedom isn’t a Christian value. It’s a secular value. If someone believe in religious freedom then they might be a good American, but they clearly don’t believe the Bible. And if someone doesn’t believe the Bible they can’t call themselves a Christian.
Religious freedom is contrary to the Bible. It’s a sin against the First Commandment.
