America’s Christian legacy is nothing to be proud of. Anymore than our legacies of slavery and genocide.
These three legacies are painful stains on America’s past and something our society and government have been working on rectifying for years. And we are still paying the price for these mistakes. But we have acknowledged them as such and are still trying to make them right.
Except for Christianity. There is a trend to try to white-wash our extremists Christian legacy and bring it back into play. But let us not accept the lie that radical Christianity is harmless.
Colonial America was a hot bed of Christian extremism that brought us the likes of the Salem Witch Trials and the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649 which proscribed the death penalty for anyone who didn’t believe in the Christian trinity. Thankfully that was soon overturned and our founding fathers instead opted for the secular concept of religious freedom “for all” as written in the First Amendment.
We must speak out about our shameful Christian legacy so that we don’t repeat that mistake.
